About Manali
Manali in Himachal Pradesh, India derived its name from Manavalaya i.e. the abode of Manu. According to myth, Manu the divine law-giver, was the only survivor of the Mahajal Pralay - the great flood -
and is said to have fathered the human race. He certainly chose enchanting environs. Manali still maintains its charm and beauty. With the majestic grandeur of the Himalayas on one side, river Beas
cutting across the town, verdant valleys with rolling meadows and grazing herds dotting the hillsides, apple orchards and the folk music adding romance to the ambience and presenting a wondrous canvas
to the traveller.
Experience the local color and beauty in Kullu-Manali's temples, quaint villages and the vibrant and festive mood of the people and their colorful clothes and handicrafts. Or encounter adventure; on

Hadimba Temple: Manali has many attractions but the chief centre of interest, historically and archeologically, is undoubtedly the DHOONGRI TEMPLE dedicated to goddess Hadimba or Hadimba Devi.
It has four-tiered Pagoda shaped roof and the doorway is carved with legendary figures and symbols. Hadimba Devi Temple in Manali is located amidst wooden forest of deodar is about 2.5 kms. from the
Manali Tourist Office. It is a pleasant experience to stroll in the Hadimba Devi Temple complex which was built in 1533 A.D. A large festival is held here in May every year.
Manu Temple: 3 kms. from the Main Bazar in Old Manali, lies the Temple of MANU RISHI. It is believed that this is the only temple of Manu Rishi in India, and Manu Rishi was the creator of human
race on the earth.
Jagatsukh: Situated on the left bank, Jagatsukh is famous for it's Shiva temple in Shikhara style. Shooru village, nearby, has the old and historically interesting Sharvali Devi temple. Jagatsukh
was formerly the capital of Kullu state.
Tibetan Monasteries: There are 3 newly constructed colorful Monasteries in Manali. The Tibetans living around these Monasteries in Manali offer a vide range of Tibetan Handicrafts and Carpets to
the visitors to buy. Two of these Monasteries are located in the main down-town of Manali and one Monastery in Aleo. Aleo is located on the Left Bank of River Beas in Manali.
Vashist Hot Water Springs and Temple (3 Kms): Vashist, a small village located on the Left Bank of River Beas in Manali towards Rohtang pass is worth a visit. Vashist Hot Water Springs and Temple
is renowned for it's Hot Water Springs and Temples. Nearby is the Pyramidal Stone Temple dedicated to Vashist Muni. There is another Temple of Lord Ram as well. Natural Hot Sulphur Water Springs with
two separate bathing tanks for Gents and Ladies, which are always full of tourists. Turkish Style Showers fitted baths have also been built nearby. Hot water from the nearby Spring is provided for bathing.
Club House (2 kms): Club House in Manali is 2 kms. walking distance from down town, Club House has indoor games facilities and Club House is located on the Left Bank of Manalsu Nallah which further
flows down to River Beas. Club House and it's surroundings have been developed into beautiful PICNIC spots.
Mountaineering Institute (3 kms): Mountaineering Institute in Manali is located 3 kms. from down-town on the Left Bank of River Beas. Mountaineering Institute in Manali organizes basic &
advance training courses in, trekking, mountaineering, skiing and water sports. Skiing and trekking equipments can be hired from Mountaineering Institute by booking in advance. Tourists can visit
an interesting showroom of Mountaineering Institute.
Solang Valley (13 kms): Solang Valley in Manali is located at a distance of 13 kms. is a splendid valley between Solang village and Beas Kund. Solang valley offers the view of glaciers and snow
capped mountains and peaks. Solang Valley has fine ski slopes. The Mountaineering Institute of Manali has installed a ski lift for training purpose. Located here is a hut and guest house of the
Mountaineering and Allied sports Institute, Manali. Now a few hotels have also come up. The winter skiing festival is organised in Solang Valley. Training in skiing is imparted at this place.
Rohtang Pass (50 kms): Rohtang Pass is the highest point, 4,112m, on the Manali-Keylong road, 51-km from Manali town. It provides a wide panoramic view of mountains rising far above clouds, which
is a sight truly breath-taking.
Arjun Gufa (5 kms): On the left bank of the Beas, 5-km from Manali near the village of Prini, is the 'Arjun Gufa' or the cave of Arjuna. In here Arjuna practised austerities to get Pashupata
Ashtra or weapon from Lord Indra.
Beas Kund (50 kms): It is the source of river Beas, at the Rohtang Pass and is easily accessible. The great sage, Vyas performed `Tapa' here during the Mahabharat times. The place is still
hallowed by the celestial light. It was because of this that the river got the present name of Beas.
Kothi (12 kms): It is a pretty little village, 12-km from Manali on the Keylong road at the foot of Rohtang Pass. There are very fine views from Kothi, and the Beas River flows through a very
deep and narrow gorge at this point. The well-situated Public Works Department (PWD) Resthouse is a popular place for overnight stays. Close to the rest house is an awe-inspiring gorge where Beas enters
a chasm about 61m deep and just few metres broad.
Old Manali (3 kms): The old Manali area is located some 3-km from the present day Manali. The old Manali is covered with guesthouses, which look ancient now, and orchards where the livestock move
at will.
Rahalla Falls (16 kms): About 16-km from Manali and 4-km away from Kothi, at the start of the climb to the Rohtang Pass, are the beautiful Rahalla Falls at an altitude of 2,501m.
Solang Nullah (14 kms): 14-km northwest of Manali in the Solang Valley, this place offers Himachal Pradesh's best ski slopes. The Mountaineering and Allied Sports Institute operates a 300m high
ski lift and the month of February is the best month to ski over here. HPTDC runs seven-day package for ski courses with accommodation in the Hotel Rohtang Manaslu in Manali. Courses are also offered
by the Mountaineering and Allied Sports Institute and the North Face Ski School. |
